5 Awesome Activities for All Ages @ Rottnest Island

My parents and I recently had the opportunity to spend 3 nights and 4 lovely days at Rottnest Island in Western Australia. I had been over several times prior and always stayed on mates’ boats but this time had the opportunity to stay on the island. A friend of ours runs a restaurant on the no-car driving island and allowed us to stay in the former Australian Defence Force barracks at Kingstown.

It was an absolutely amazing trip as we did not know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised with the breathtaking flora and fauna as well as the rich history of the island. My parents are in their late 70’s and not as mobile as they used to be so good transportation, hydration and enthusiasm are paramount

Quokka selfie’s are all the rage. Celebrities from Roger Federer to Liam Hemsworth have taken selfies with Quokka’s at Rottnest.

With the advent of social media, they are even more popular than ever. So how do you take a selfie with a quokka?

  1. Approach the marsupial quietly & gently as they are wild and protected
  2. Attempt to get in a position so that both you and the quokka are facing the camera and then snap away
  3. Quokka’s feed at dusk so best to attempt to get your happy snap while they are out foraging.

Oliver Hill

The main military defense of the island the Fremantle Harbour during WWII, the hills’ 9.2 inch gun was one of 2 on the island. Constructed to protect the shipping in and out of Fremantle and the refuelling foreign fleets the gun was only ever fired in practice and never in defense.

Take a bus from the main settlement to the hill for an hour long tour of the gun, its working and support rooms well below. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Western Australian coastline from Kwinana to Yanchep from atop the pristine position. For further information on tours please visit HERE

Wadjemup Lighthouse

7

The tallest point on the island and one of 2 lighthouses, Wadjimup was originally constructed in 1849 with the current structure having been completed in 1896.

The bus from the main settlement does not go up to the light house and drops you off on the road to the entrance to the lighthouse. From there it is approximately a 15 – 20-minute walk, depending upon fitness, to get to this grand structure.

The views are magnificent and the history, rich. Take in a bit of respite before the easy descent back to the intra-island bus and continue heading west. Further information can be viewed HERE

Geordie Bay / Fay Bay

11

Located on the north side of the island and a quick 10 minute bus ride from the main settlement, Geordie Bay is a must. With a general store, accommodation and a bay full of gorgeous boats, prepare for a visual feast.

Down the pathway is Fay Bay, which is a little bit more secluded for those preferring privacy.

Little Salmon Bay / Pinky’s Beach

14

Pristine! Regardless of where you have been in the world, the colour of the water here is sure to impress. Protected from the predominant Southwest wind, Pinky’s Beach is ideal for children and a short bike ride or stroll from the main settlement.

There is a new glamping village located at Pinky’s with upmarket accommodation, a bar & restaurant as well as a swimming pool for those who need a dose of non-saltwater. See all on offer at Pinky’s Beach Club.

Rottnest is a 30 minutes ferry ride from Fremantle or a 45-minute ride from Hillarys Boat Harbour. Day trips are more than enough or full weeks of holidays will ensure you return rested and recuperated. Rottnest Island is an A-class reserve governed by the Rottnest Island Authority which ensures that the island is maintained for generations to come.
